How to Show Link and Image Descriptions on Any Website

What are Link and Image Descriptions?

This feature shows hidden information about links and images when you hover over them. Many links have title text that describes where they lead, and images often have alt text that describes what the image shows. This feature displays that information in a tooltip so you can see it easily.

Step 1: Open Helperbird

Click the Helperbird icon in your browser toolbar. It looks like a small owl and is usually in the top-right corner of your browser.

This will open the Helperbird menu.

Step 2: Go to the All Features Section

Scroll down to the bottom of the Helperbird menu. You will see a section called All Features.

Click the arrow next to All Features to expand it and show all available features.

Step 3: Find Link & Image Descriptions

Look through the list of features until you see Link & Image Descriptions.

Step 4: Turn on the Feature

Click the toggle switch next to Link & Image Descriptions to turn it on. The toggle will turn green when it is enabled.

Step 5: Hover Over Links and Images

Move your mouse over any link or image on the page.

A small tooltip will appear showing:

  • For links: The title or destination of the link
  • For images: The alt text description of the image

This helps you understand what links and images are about before interacting with them.

Tip: This feature is especially useful on pages with many links, helping you decide which ones are worth clicking.

Let me tell you, I didn't know how badly I needed this until I got it. It was much like when I got glasses, I had just assumed that was how everyone saw the world...then it wasn't. Thank you Helperbird for the efforts you put forth in this lovely extension for everyone to use. The fact that you can use so much on the free just goes to show that this is something to help aid people not just some money grab. However with the pricing it still couldn't be a money grab. It's easy to use with every webpage since it's just an extension. You can access lots of different functions to declutter a page (show only the relevant text and not ads, for example). You can add post it notes to annotate, and it has things like text-to-speech.

I have ADHD and yesterday Helperbird and the text-to-speech function (available in free version) turned a 28-page reading assignment from a two-day task to roughly two hours, maybe three at the absolute most. It helped tremendously! And I loved that the text-to-speech has such a fluid voice compared to a lot of others I've used! Honestly, the fact that this was created by someone who knows the struggles is something I love, because then it has neurodivergency in mind. I've tried too many things in the past that were created by neurotypical folk trying to be helpful to us and I do appreciate it, but it doesn't work as well because our brains work different. Highly recommend!

I found this extension on a whim to help myself. Suffering with post concussion syndrome symptoms and working remotely is really hard! This extension basically saved my job. It gave me back productivity and the ability to read the screen. This extension has so many neat features I never even knew I needed. I love this and you will too!
