How to Import Your Helperbird Settings

Learn how to import a previously exported Helperbird settings file to restore your preferences on a new device or after a reset.

·

Why Import Your Settings?

If you previously exported your Helperbird settings, you can import that file to restore all your preferences in one step. This is useful when you are setting up Helperbird on a new computer or browser, restoring your settings after a reset, or applying a shared configuration, for example a teacher distributing a recommended setup to students.

You need a settings file that was exported from Helperbird using the Export Settings feature.

Step 1: Open Helperbird

Click the Helperbird icon in your browser toolbar. It looks like a small owl and is usually in the top-right corner of your browser.

This will open the Helperbird menu.

Step 2: Open the Settings Page

Click the gear icon in the top-left corner of the Helperbird menu. This will open the Settings page.

Step 3: Click Import Next to Settings

Scroll down to the Import section on the Settings page. You will see a Settings row with an Import button next to it.

Click the Import button.

Step 4: Select Your .helperbird File

A file picker will open. It only accepts .helperbird files — the same format that Helperbird exports. Navigate to where you saved your exported settings file and select it.

Step 5: Confirm the Import

Helperbird will load the settings from the file and apply them. All your feature preferences, colors, fonts, sizes, and other customizations will be restored.

Important: Importing settings will replace your current settings with the ones from the file. If you want to keep your current settings as a backup, export them first before importing.

Tip: This feature works great for schools and organizations. An administrator or teacher can configure Helperbird with the ideal settings, export the file, and then distribute it to students or staff to import on their own devices.

Helperbird is an excellent extension supporting a range of learning differences. Aside from providing many evidence-based dyslexia-assistive tools, the extension also functions as an easy-to-use, feature-rich web experience customization tool suitable to support a wide range of cognitive differences (i.e., color blindness and ADHD-related focus concerns, among others). Also, the developer is a very good person who supports the various learning-different communities in many ways, including by designing the free version of Helperbird to provide enough functionality to be beneficial to people who cannot afford to subscribe to the full-function version.

I've been meaning to write this review for a while now. My daughter is newly diagnosed with dyslexia and I heard an interview with Robert on a Newstalk podcast and sought it out. I wasn't sure if I had it installed correctly on her laptop and Robert was on straight away to help. He was amazing. This app has changed everything for my daughter. Everything is accessible to her and everyday tasks and schoolwork are so much easier. She also has visual stress so the coloured overlay feature is a game changer for her. I would highly recommend this app to anyone, she couldn't be without it now!

I have been trying to find ways to make my child happy to go to school again, and someone recommended helperbird. She loves helperbird, and she is now much happier about the idea of returning to school. I think this might be a game changer, as they do so much web based schoolwork and research. She says they really understand people with dyslexia

Immersive Reader from Microsoft is amazing, but my friends in Google districts were missing out until I found Helperbird. Great for proofreading! Simply highlight the text and have it read back to you, change the spacing in your view, highlight parts of speech, even translate by word or by document to have it read to you and adjust the speed! So amazing that I posted a YouTube tutorial within days of installing it. Plus, unlike many extensions, it didn't ask for obnoxious permissions like asking to delete everything in my Google Drive. #Winner #a11y
