What is High Contrast?

High Contrast mode changes the colors on a website to make text and images easier to see. It increases the difference between light and dark areas, which can make reading much easier.

Helperbird offers several different contrast styles so you can choose the one that works best for you.

Who is This For?

This feature is helpful for:

  • People with low vision who need stronger contrast
  • Anyone with visual impairments
  • People who find it hard to read light text on light backgrounds
  • Anyone who wants to reduce eye strain
  • People who are sensitive to certain colors

Step 1: Open Helperbird

Click the Helperbird icon in your browser toolbar. It looks like a small owl and is usually in the top-right corner of your browser.

This will open the Helperbird menu.

Step 2: Open the All Features Section

Scroll down to the bottom of the Helperbird menu. You will see a section called All Features.

Click the arrow next to All Features to expand it and show all available features.

Step 3: Find Display Options

Look through the list of features until you see Display options.

Step 4: Open Display Options

Click on Display options to open it.

A panel will appear showing various display settings you can adjust.

Step 5: Turn on High Contrast

In the Display options panel, look for High contrast.

Click the toggle switch next to it to turn it on. The toggle will turn green when it is enabled.

Step 6: Choose a Contrast Style

Once High contrast is turned on, several style buttons will appear below the toggle.

Click on any style to apply it. The website will immediately change to show your chosen contrast settings.

Contrast Styles

Helperbird offers five different high contrast styles:

  • Increased Contrast – Makes the existing colors stronger without changing them. Text becomes sharper and easier to read against backgrounds.

  • Greyscale – Removes all colors from the page. Everything appears in shades of grey, black, and white. This is helpful if colors are distracting.

  • Inverted Color – Flips all colors to their opposites. Light backgrounds become dark, and dark text becomes light. This is useful for reducing glare from bright pages.

  • Inverted Greyscale – Combines greyscale and inverted colors. The page becomes black and white with the colors flipped. Good for maximum contrast.

  • Yellow on Black – Displays text in yellow on a black background. This specific color combination is very helpful for many people with visual impairments.

Tip: Try each style to see which one is most comfortable for your eyes. Many people find that different styles work better for different websites or lighting conditions.

I really liked the ease of setting up and also accessing the tool while you are on chrome. I had no trouble, and within a week found myself using it without even noticing.

Where to start! Firstly, I'd like to thank Robert (the developer) for his generosity - the app is extremely cheap as apps go. It is very apparent that this app is a labour of love - Robert is constantly working on it and improving things, adding new features, etc. As someone with ADHD and ASD, I have always had to piece-meal together the features I need to help me study effectively - half a dozen different apps / extensions, and even then they don't quite meet my expectations. Helperbird, however, offers SO MUCH more, and all in one place - you can finetune your experience to your heart's desire. The features I particularly love are summarise, simplify, sticky notes, highlighting, and the amazing immersive reader with TTS. I can't sing Helperbird's praises enough. Thank you, Robert, for such a thoughtful - and genuinely helpful - app. You are empowering the neurodivergent everywhere.

A truly great extension! We installed this on all of our 200 Chromebooks across the 3 special schools i work in and it has greatly helped our students use technology to learn. It not only helps our dyslexic learners, but also our autistic and ADHD students by helping remove distractions and making the web a more accessible place. Support is fast and efficient, and updates are very regular with new features constantly being added!

Helperbird is an excellent extension supporting a range of learning differences. Aside from providing many evidence-based dyslexia-assistive tools, the extension also functions as an easy-to-use, feature-rich web experience customization tool suitable to support a wide range of cognitive differences (i.e., color blindness and ADHD-related focus concerns, among others). Also, the developer is a very good person who supports the various learning-different communities in many ways, including by designing the free version of Helperbird to provide enough functionality to be beneficial to people who cannot afford to subscribe to the full-function version.
