What is Website Exclusion?

Website exclusion lets you choose specific websites where Helperbird will not run. When you visit one of those websites, Helperbird automatically turns off. All your features will still work normally on every other website.

This is useful if a website doesn't work well with Helperbird, or if you want Helperbird turned off on certain pages like testing platforms or work tools.

Who is This For?

This feature is helpful for:

  • Students who need Helperbird turned off during online tests
  • Anyone who finds that a specific website doesn't work well with Helperbird
  • Users who want Helperbird off on certain work or school tools
  • People who want more control over where Helperbird runs

Step 1: Open Helperbird Settings

Click the Helperbird icon in your browser toolbar to open the popup. Then click the Settings gear icon in the top-left corner of the popup.

This will open the Helperbird Settings page in a new tab.

Step 2: Find the Disable on Websites Section

Scroll down the Settings page until you see the section called Disable on websites.

Step 3: Turn On the Exclusion List

You will see a toggle switch next to Enable website exclusion list. Turn this on to start using the feature.

Step 4: Add a Website

Once the exclusion list is turned on, you will see a text field where you can type a website address.

Type the domain name of the website you want to exclude. For example, type typingclub.com and then click the Add button or press Enter.

You do not need to type https:// or www. - just the domain name is enough.

You can add up to 10 websites to your list. Each website you add will appear as a small pill below the text field.

Tip: Adding a domain like example.com will also cover all its subdomains, such as mail.example.com or app.example.com.

Step 5: Remove a Website

To remove a website from your exclusion list, click the X button on the pill next to the website name.

The website will be removed immediately and Helperbird will start working on that site again.

Note: If your school or workplace has added websites to the exclusion list, those will appear with a lock icon and cannot be removed. Only your administrator can change those.

What Happens on an Excluded Website

When you visit a website on your exclusion list:

  • The Helperbird toolbar icon shows a blue || badge
  • The popup shows a message saying Helperbird is disabled on this website
  • The on/off toggle is greyed out so it cannot be changed
  • No Helperbird features will run on that page

When you switch to a different tab that is not excluded, everything goes back to normal.

This extension has been an absolute lifesaver. I have that fantastic combo of ADHD and Dyslexia while trying to go through college. I have difficulty keeping letters in order, seeing the gaps between words, and with ADHD on top, I lose focus A LOT. The immersive reader has been my new best friend. It drowns out the rest of the content on the page, changes the font to something I can read, and highlights the word as it reads to me. My eyes are forced to keep going in the right direction. I can slow down and pay attention to what I'm reading. I don't even have to go back and read the same paragraph 5 times to understand it! The screen overlay has been outstanding for eye strain and being able to distinguish between words and spaces. The custom font and spacing for research articles have been an enormous advantage! I can actually read the research papers now and not have this daunting 2 column fine print page to squint over. All around, this has been the best purchase I've ever had. I use this every day, with every assignment. I don't even struggle with story-based questions anymore. The immersive reader helps me read, listen, and understand the question all at once. I am still exploring what I can use this with and how it can make my academic career, and I keep getting impressed with every new way I find to use it. Seriously, try it out. You won't regret it at all. Even if you don't have dyslexia or ADHD, just try it out. You might find that it helps you understand the content you're trying to learn even better!
